Silymarin (Milk Thistle) is a naturally occurring medicinal plant that has been used since ancient times in treating illnesses. The hepato-protective and antioxidant activity of silymarin, derived from milk thistle, inhibits free radicals produced from toxic substances in the liver. Silyamrin also enhances hepatic glutathione contributing to the antioxidant defense of the liver.
Silymarin is proven to show a slight increase in survival rate in treatment of patients with alcoholic and non- alcoholic liver disease.
Milk thistle, in addition decreases blood sugar levels and also reduces cholesterol levels in people with type II diabetes.
UDCA (Ursodeoxycholic acid) & Vitamin E together have shown a multiplied effect in improving non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, lobular inflammation, hepatocellular ballooning and fibrosis.
While Vitamin E helps reduce serum alanine and aspartate aminotransferase levels. UDCA produces stabilization of cell membranes and improves biliary secretion of bile acids, improving bile flow. UDCA also has immunomodulatory properties that may reduce immune-mediated liver damage.
